NASA Discovers a Thruster System Which Requires Absolutely No Propellant
In 2016, researchers at NASA’s Johnson Space Centre discovered a thruster system which requires absolutely no propellant but still generates thrust. The implications of this finding are far-reaching from applications for space flight to other technologies which need propulsion. This discovery could one day make them much less expensive, enabling space exploration to expand exponentially.
The existence of this technology means that energy can be obtained from tapping into the quantum vacuum, also called the “zero-point.”
This is a very exciting discovery for Asgardia as they work towards setting up the first ever space nation with habitable platforms in low-Earth orbit.
The main thing is that space is not empty, and the energy which is there can be used. This was experimentally confirmed when the Casimir Effect illustrated zero points or vacuum state energy, which predicts that two metal plates close together attract each other as a result of an imbalance in the quantum fluctuations.
The propellant-less thruster, invented by Guido Fetta, has been named Cannae Drive. NASA tested it over an eight-day testing period that occurred in August of 2013. It’s also called the EM drive. It demonstrated that a small amount of thrust was achieved inside a container without the use of any fuel. The results were then presented at the 50th Joint Propulsion Conference in Cleveland, Ohio in July 2014.
Currently, it’s about to be launched into space, and, as reported by many, such as ScienceAlert.com, the EM is controversial because, although specific experiments have proposed that this type of engine could work, it also goes against one of the most fundamental laws of physics.
It’s a law that Issac Newton discovered, known as the law of conservation of momentum, which states that an equal and opposite reaction must stem from an action. Thus, for something to gain momentum it must expel some kind of propellant in the opposite direction. However, the EM drive taps into the ‘zero-point’ field of energy/electromagnetic waves, creating thrust by microwave photons bouncing around inside a cone-shaped metal cavity. The cone-shaped metal cavity is what pushes it in the opposite direction.
This invention is thrilling since it essentially proves that we have a limitless resource of energy to tap into and use for space travel. This is presently the biggest obstacle for modern day space travel and exploration.
Presently, engineers are inventing power generators that use these new concepts. These laws need to be refined to account for the fact that space is not empty, what we currently accept as fact is going to have to change, and developments like the EM drive, or electrical generators that used these concepts, are going to have to be acknowledged soon. Throughout history, new developments in fields such as energy have always taken their time finding their way into the marketplace, but this invention holds a lot of promise for the future of space travel.
