Welcome to Asgardia, the Space Nation
Welcome to Asgardia, the first ever space nation—a global, unifying and humanitarian project.
Our nation has recently made quite a splash in international news, spurring massive interest in our year-old nation the world over. As a newcomer to Asgardia, we want to provide you with a quick overview of our nation, along with instructions on how you can become a full-fledged citizen of Asgardia!
What is Asgardia?
Asgardia is a full-fledged nation, with our own flag, anthem, embassies, currency, Constitution, and sovereign territory. But not sovereign territory on Earth…
When Dr. Igor Ashurbeyli, our founding father, announced the birth of Asgardia in October 2016, we started a journey unparalleled in the history of our species. We believe that access to outer space should be a human right, beyond the control of any Earthly nation. Our future is in the stars, and Asgardia is taking the first steps into that vast frontier as the very first space nation.
Asgardia-1 is our first satellite and a sovereign territory of our nation, currently in Earth orbit. Asgardia-1 carries with it the data of our many citizens, along with our dreams for the future.
Although we are the first nation to have sovereign territory in space, no one can live there quite yet. One of the major long-term goals of Asgardia is to build a habitable, orbital space station where our citizens can reside.
At the moment, Asgardia exists in digital form, maintaining operations around the globe through asgardia.space and other digital platforms. This nation puts no restrictions and holds no prejudice on any race, gender orientation, or Earthly religion. Our purpose is to serve all of humanity, no matter who they are or where on Earth they may have been born.
You may have noticed that the operational language of Asgardia is English. We want to stress that this is not the “official” language of Asgardia. The Asgardian Constitution was published in the 12 most commonly spoken languages of Asgardia and we are currently working to publish all Asgardian official materials in these same languages… One of which you might be reading right now!
How to Become a Citizen
It’s actually very simple to become an Asgardian. You can apply to be a citizen online through this very website. Just click on “Become an Asgardian citizen” in the top menu or one of the ‘Browse our site’ menus and then fill out the short form. Submit your basic information and after agreeing with the terms and conditions of Asgardia, you will be given the option to accept the Asgardian Constitution. If you accept, you will become an Asgardian citizen, with full voting rights, the ability to file petitions, and the right to run for Parliament. If you do not accept the Constitution, you will still be able to create an account, but will be considered a “tourist” of Asgardia rather than a citizen.
After you apply, you will be sent a confirmation email with your account password. To confirm that you are a real person, we ask you to please click the link included in the email to verify both your account and citizenship.
After you accept the Constitution, you will be asked to give more detailed information about yourself, including your country of citizenship, country of residence, city of residence, street address (optional), gender, and electoral district (your district is defined by your spoken language). There’s also the option to provide additional information such as your primary language, any other languages you speak, the highest level of education you’ve completed, your given name, and your family name.
After you are finished your application, you will be greeted by a webpage giving you information about voting for your parliamentary representatives. Here, you can find more information about all of the candidates in your “district”, or even nominate yourself. (But there is plenty of time to figure all this out later!)
For now, we suggest that you introduce yourself to your fellow citizens in our Welcome Forum. In our online forums, you can engage with other citizens of your new nation; join conversations about politics, art, culture, science, and much more. As with any nation, citizen engagement is an essential part of governance. We have a very engaged and passionate citizenship here in Asgardia, something we pride ourselves on!
While the forums enable you to connect with all Asgardians regardless of location, you can also communicate with fellow Asgardians in your own geographic-region on asgardia.space. Here you’ll find the personal blogs where you’ll see content from Asgardians who are located in your town or city. Login to your account to start your own personal blog, post photos, share local event announcements, or simply to network with other Asgardians nearby.
As an Asgardian, you can send your data to space! As a citizen, you can send up to 200KB of data to Asgardia-1, truly making yourself a part of the first step of our nation towards the stars.
